The Kennesaw Museum Foundation Inc., is a 501©3 whose mission is to support the community and educational outreach programs of the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History and to assist the Museum in the preservation of its archival and artifact materials.  In existence since 1998, the Foundation is composed of 35 business, community and political leaders from throughout the metro-Atlanta.  The Foundation supports a number of educational and community outreach projects at the Museum, including:

  • Living History presentations
  • Special Exhibits
  • Lecture Series
  • Artifact acquisitions
  •  Exhibit development and enhancement

The opening of the new $6.5 million Southern Museum on March 20, 2003 forever altered the educational and heritage tourism landscape of Georgia and the entire Southeastern United States.  The 50,000 sq. ft. facility contains three permanent galleries; a 3,500 sq. ft. temporary/traveling exhibit gallery; a theatre; classrooms and library and archives.  The Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, has opened untapped educational synergies and opportunities for children and adults that were created through local school initiatives and public programming.  Moreover, the Museum’s economic impact has proven beneficial to both the corporate members and the local community.  This world-class tourism attraction is also home to the Jolley Education Center, with 8,000 square feet dedicated to the education and entertainment of young children.  Coming in 2012 is the new Research Center, which will house the ever-increasing collection of documents, manuscripts and photographs.  Once completed, this new building will provide opportunities for the general public to access these materials.
