The Southern Museum
Take a trip back in time to the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia! One of the top metro Atlanta museums, the Southern Museum has three impressive permanent collections and a membership in the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations Program. This world-class Atlanta tourism attraction offers a wide range of exhibits, including a glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers in its Civil War collection; a reproduction of a turn-of-the-century locomotive assembly line from the Glover Machine Works; and an exciting depiction of the Civil War’s Great Locomotive Chase, featuring the General locomotive.
A special gallery features traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) as well as other sources and will be changed every few months, so visit this City of Kennesaw facility often!

Opening of new exhibit: Working Safely on the Railroad
August 27 — Free with Museum admission
Children will love discovering the new “Working on the Railroad” exhibit, which uses railroad artifacts to promote safe working and traveling conditions. This interactive exhibit will focus on the role Railroad Unions played in the development of safety.

Special exhibit continues: The Old Guard of the Gate City Guard
May 28 – October 16 — Free with Museum admission
The exhibit commemorates the sesquicentennial of the Civil War and provides an intriguing look into the history of the Gate City Guard, one of the first military units to respond to the call of arms in defense of Georgia during the Civil War. The history of the Guard is depicted through donated artifacts including medals, swords, pikes, a masthead lantern and a LeMatt revolver.
